8 natural ways to slow down aging
No one want to age, that’s for sure. And there’s good news – you can do a lot of things to slow down aging process. Plus, if you cut out some of the major aging offenders, you could look and feel years younger than your biological age. These8 ways can help you slow down the hands of time.
1. Stop smoking and don’t think e-cigarettes are better
Cigarette smoke is one of the most potent agers ever, thanks to its 4,000 toxicants. Smoking for a long period of time significantly increases your chances of having age-related diseases, including hardening of the arteries, pulmonary fibrosis, and many others. But electronic cigarettes are not better. E-cigarettes often spew benzene, the same aging compound emitted from most scented candles. Plus, e-cig aerosolscontain such carcinogens and reproductive toxins like formaldehyde, lead, cadmium, and nickel.
2. Stress less
According to studies, chronic psychological stress leads to age-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, decreased immunity, and neural degeneration. To mitigate the toxic effects of stress, try taking part in transcendental or mindfulness meditation, which can lower anxiety, depression, and anger, while improving psychological conditions. Exercising is also a great and effective way to get rid of stress.
3. Eat fresh
Avoid processed food as much as possible – phosphates added to themrev up the aging process, interfering with vitamin D activation and weakening your bones. There are 45 different types of phosphates added to processed foods (you can see them among the ingredients: “sodium phosphate,” “calcium phosphate” and “phosphoric acid”).Remember, that GMO food has also been linked to accelerated aging. Common nonorganic ingredients like cottonseed oil, canola oil, soy, and corn are often genetically engineered. Instead, opt for fresh, organic vegetables and fruits. Your body will thank you.
4. No added sugars
When you consume too much sugar, it can eventually show up on your face in the form of early wrinkles. It happens because of glycation – the natural process where sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products (in short AGEs, ironically). More sugar you eat, more AGEs build up and beat up nearby proteins. The protein fibers collagen and elastin, which keep skin firm and elastic, are most vulnerable to this damage. These fibers, once damaged, become dry and brittle and lead to wrinkles and sagging. A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology reports that these age-related changes to the skin start at about age 35 and increase rapidly after that.
5. Stop drinking soda
Sodas are full of sugars (see above) and phosphates, or phosphoric acid. Too much phosphoric acid can lead to heart and kidney problems, muscle loss, and osteoporosis. And one study, published in a 2010 issue of the FASEB Journal, suggests it could even trigger accelerated aging.
6. Wear less makeup
The makeup you’re wearing to hide wrinkles could actually be aging you. Isn’t it ironic? According to a 2013 study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, paraben chemicals commonly used in personal care products and pharmaceuticals act as estrogenic hormone disruptors, throwing normal female fertility into a premature aging process.
7. Spend time with friends
According to a 2007 research in the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science, feelings of loneliness make it harder to deal with life’s challenges, which prompts the release of high levels of stress hormones, which over time can lead to accelerated aging, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
8. Don’t use scented candles
You probably don’t think about aging smelling at your favorite scented candle. But surprisingly it can be making you age faster than normal. Most scented candles are made with paraffin wax and scented with synthetic fragrances, both of which are derived from petroleum. When you burn paraffin wax or scented soy wax candles inside of your house, various cancer-causing, age-accelerating chemicals like benzene and toluene are released. Toxic candle soot can linger for extended periods of time all around your house, even accumulating in your air filter. So ditch your candles and just open windows to fill your home with fresh air. Or if you can’t live without candles, buy ones made of 100% beeswax with cotton wicks for much cleaner burning.
