7 simple ways to keep your nails from breaking
We all want our nails strong and beautiful. Nails dry out easily, so you should protect them by keeping them well moisturized. With these simple tips your nails will definitely be an object of envy.
1. Keep moisturizer at and on your fingertips
Keep your moisturizer at bath sink, beside your bed, at your desk, and even in your purse. This way you’ll be able to apply it as often as possible.
2. Soak before clipping
Since dry nails are more likely to crack and split when clipped, trim them after you took a bath or 15-minute hand soak.
3. Choose the right file
Metal files can split nails, so you better avoid them and use emery boards, but the best option will be padded files in a fine grit, they are the gentlest ones.
4. Go for size, not shape
No matter what shape of tips you want, oval or square, just remember to file them in one direction. And keep them at about ¼ inch.
5. Wear polish or a clear topcoat to help nails retain moisture
Avoid anything with formaldehyde, as it could cause nail separation or, in some cases, allergic reactions; and also toluene, which can be drying. Clinique, Barielle, Almay, and Revlon – these brands sell polishes free of both ingredients.
6. Use removers less
Try not to remove polish more than once a week. Acetone-free removers are gentler to your nails but they still contain acetate, which can also be harsh and drying.
7. Wear gloves when necessary
Wear them in cold weather, when doing dishes, and at bedtime (apply lotion first for an overnight treatment) to prevent moisture loss.
