10 foods that speed up aging process

There are many factors that influence how your age – genetics, sun exposure, smoking, environment, etc. But what you eat is one of the most important one. The aging process is inevitable, but you can postpone its negative effects. Along with regular physical activity, eating the right foods is a great way to slow down aging. This works the other way around, too: if you consume too much bad food regularly, it will add some extra year to your look. Try to avoid the following products, replacing them with the good, beneficial ones:

1. Margarine and trans fats

Margarine contains a lot of trans fats, which destroy hydration. And if your skin is not hydrated enough, you’ll see the wrinkles on it much faster. Also trans fats affect your skin cells and make you more susceptible to UV damage to the skin. Plus, they are extremely inflammatory substances.

2. Microwave dinners

Frozen meals are incredibly high in sodium, which contributes to water retention and an overall “puffy”, aged appearance. Do yourself a favor: make time and cook some home-made fresh meal.

3. Bacon, ham and sausage and charred meats

Preservatives used in processed meats may create free radicals in the body, which lead to oxidation of your cells and DNA, and can lead, in turn, to cancer or other nasty diseases. As to charred meats, meat that has been burnt is very inflammatory to the body. And inflammation, as we know, may break down collagen levels in the skin, leading to an aged appearance.

4. Energy drinks

All energy drinks contain lots of sugar, plus they are very acidic, which can damage your teeth, leavingstains on them. Energy drinks, due to their high caffeine and sodium content, can lead to dehydration, especially if you are drinking them instead of water. And dehydration is one of the main factors that contributes to older looking skin. Drink 8-10 glasses of water per day, instead.

5. Baked goods and candy

Baked goods are full of added sugars and fats, which always lead to weight gain and poor dental health. Sugar causes an unhealthy microbiome and inflammation, which is major inhibitor to having clear, beautiful skin. Plus, sugar damages collagen and elastin, which keeps the skin looking soft and supple. All these factors accelerate the aging process. Also processed sugar is quickly processed in the body, which can lead to a high insulin response and fast weight gain. Replace your favorite but unhealthy sweets with dark chocolate – it’s been proved to have anti-inflammatory properties, which make it safe to eat. Just make sure you look for varieties with no added sugar.

6. High fructose corn and agave syrup

High fructose corn syrup is believed to be the worst kind of sugar for your skin and overall health. Excessive amounts of sugar damage your skin’s collagen and elastin,making wrinkles appear on it faster. Stay away from all processed foods and snacks, which are packed with this syrup. As to agave, people tend to think of it as a healthier alternative to sugar, but this sweet syrup is loaded with fructose, which also breaks down collagen in our skin.

7. Alcohol and sugary cocktails

A glass or two of wine is fine occasionally, but when you drink alcohol to excess, especially sugary cocktails (which have over 50 grams of added sugar in 1 cocktail!), it causes free radicals. Plus, alcohol robs the body of vitamin A, an antioxidant that’s essential for cell renewal and turnover. Try to avoid alcohol, but if you have to drink, opt for drinks without added sugars, such as wine, champagne, or a vodka soda with lime. And of course, remember to drink in moderation and alternate each alcoholic drink with water, as alcohol dehydrates you, making fine lines and wrinkles more apparent.

8. High glycemic index carbs

Foods such as bagels, oatmeal, pretzels, pasta, pizza and cereal can accelerate the skin’s aging process and wreak havoc on the skin, causing acne and rosacea. Even so-called ‘healthy’ cereals with whole grains, which are lower in glycemic index, can be packed with glucose.

9. Foods high in sodium

Foods that are high in sodium cause you to retain water and feel bloated. And the water retention makes the skin look puffy and tired. High-salt foods lead to dehydration, and, according to some studies, it damages DNA and accelerating aging.

10. Deep-fried fast food

All fast food restaurants typically use corn oil, one of the unhealthiest oils, to fry food. This oil when consumed releases free radicals in the body. Free radical damage or oxidative stress has a lot of negative effects on health and well-being, including heart disease and early wrinkles.
